Service Description: This layer is HUC12s for all NHD regions that contact CA, or are upstream catchments of regions touching CA with downstream connectivity information. It has been run through a tool that validated the HU_12_DS attribute based on a series of rules, and then the attribute was corrected for those that were wrong. So far, only the California HUC12s have been corrected. This layer also underwent further nonstandard modifications that make it somewhat incompatible with other HUC12 layers. This layer was derived from the CWS Western_US_HUCs layer and developed to be the consistent HUC12 layer in use at the UC Davis Center for Watershed Sciences. In additiion to making a few corrections to the HU_12_DS fields, we chopped off the coastal buffer on the HUC12s using the following methods: 1)We had an old copy of the HUC12s without the coastal buffer (~January 2011). 2)Select all HUCs in this layer with HU_12_DS of Ocean. 3)Intersect the layer with the older layer, generating split coastal HUC12s.Select all polygons that are offshore. Change ID so that the first digit is now an M (instead of a 1. Stands for modified. "O" for ocean was considered, but looked too much like a zero) 5) remove the Ocean flowing HUCs from the original layer 6) Merge in the new split HUCs
